Teacher takes in homeless student
By Patrice Walsh
It didn't take long for Shari Sloane to realize that one of her students needed help. She said 16-year-old Kalid Scott looked sick and always came to school hungry.
She and her husband Gabriel would make Kalid lunch everyday and offer him a place to stay if he had nowhere to go.
But soon, that wasn't enough. On Kalid's 16th birthday back in September, his grandmother's house, where he was staying, burned down. Kalid had no place to go. He said he was homeless.
That's when the Sloanes opened their home to Kalid. He became part of the family. He said they gave him back a life and helped him start over.
Kalid told us he finally had a place to lay his head at night, food on the table and he felt wanted and safe.
He joked that he really felt safe because Gabriel Sloane is not only a former Marine, but a Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy who works at the Hall of Justice.
Kalid said the Sloanes taught him what it's like to be loved.
"I learned here if you're taught with love, all you will know is love," said Scott. "If you always get beat and yelled at, you know nothing but violence."
Kalid is grateful to the Sloanes for taking him in. They said he has blessed their family and taught them to be grateful for things they sometimes take for granted
