At the start of the First World War, armies were slow to realize the combat potential of aircraft, using them at first only for aerial reconnaissance and artillery spotting. But as dedicated fighter aircraft began to emerge, designers faced a difficult problem: how to shoot a machine gun through the propeller without destroying it in the process?
