Alfonso Leng - 2 Preludes for Orchestra
Fernando Rosas/Chile SO
00:00 Andante
05:13 Andante
Alfonso Leng (1884-1974) was a Chilean Composer. Self-taught, he did not carry out systematic music studies, but only attended for a brief period during 1905 the harmony and composition courses taught by maestro Enrique Soro at the National Conservatory of Music. However, his premature artistic interests led him from a very young age to join some of the private musical institutions that operated in Santiago in the first decades of the 20th century. Among them, groups such as Los Diez, the Ortiz de Zárate Academy and the Bach Society, which brought together specialist and amateur musicians around the common search for a modern and progressive aesthetic.
In 1909, he obtained the title of dentist, then founding the university chairs of Parodontia and Physiological Chemistry, to finally be appointed first dean of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Chile in 1945. He was also a member of scientific institutions in the United States, England and Italy, and integrated the faculties of Dentistry of Cuba, Argentina and Peru.
Alfonso Leng had an active participation in the bustling academic music scene in Chile during the first half of the 20th century. He intervened in the reform of the National Conservatory of Music and in the creation of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Chile and participated in the Institute of Musical Extension of this house of studies, collaborating in the design of the Chilean Music Festivals that were developed from 1948 onwards.
