DAY IN USHUAIA, ARGENTINA | Akademik Ioffe Ship for Ushuaia to Antarctica Cruise

Today was a very exciting day for us! Not everyday you are boarding a vessel ship from Ushaia to Antarctica for a once in a lifetime Antarctica Cruise!

We started our day at 5am in Buenos Aires, when we packed our bags, and checked out of our Alvear Icon Hotel in Buenos Aires to head to the domestic airport.

After a 3.5 hour flight down to Ushuaia, Argentina, we were so lucky to find that it was a perfect day there. We couldn't believe our luck! Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world, and it is located on the southern tip of Patagonia in South America.

This tiny but beautiful town is often referred to as "the end of the world," and the "Gateway to Antarctica." The majority of Antarctica tourism starts here in Ushuaia, and this is also where you can find last minute Antarctica deals. A few passengers took the opportunity to explore and to check out the typical things to do in Ushuaia, Argentina. They visited the famous Tierra del Fuego National Park, which can be reached with public buses from Ushuaia.

Although not a guarantee, between the month of November to March, you can step into one of the tourism offices to see whether you can buy an unsold spot on a ship to Antarctica. Normally, a trip to Antarctica can cost from $9,000 to over $25,000 per person. Depending on the level of luxury and the length of the trip, you might even get it cheaper. And if you can find a last-minute deal to Antarctica, you can sometimes cut this in half!

In Ushuaia, we got a few bottles of wine and alcohol to bring on board our Antarctica ship. In case you were wondering, a bottle of Argentinian Malbec costs about $4. A 750ml bottle of vodka was less than $10. We obviously didn't get top shelf!

After spending around 5 hours in town, we finally boarded the Akademik Ioffe ship with One Ocean Expeditions. This polar ship would be our home for the next 10 days during our journey from Ushuaia, Argentina to Antarctica (and back).

There was tons of exploration to do, as well as getting to know our fellow passengers - all for running the Antarctica Marathon 2019!
