Extinct and Endangered: Insects in Peril - Now Open!
The world as we know it has been shaped by insects. They play incredibly important ecological roles, but face imminent threats around the world. Photographer Levon Biss creates incredible macro images of imperiled species—insects that are disappearing (or already gone) in our current age of mass extinction.
In collaboration with scientists at the American Museum of Natural History, Biss selected specimens from our world-class research collection to serve as representatives of insect decline.

Entomologists and field biologists are rushing to understand and quantify the rapid decline of insect populations and biodiversity. But we can’t wait to protect ecosystems. The exhibition Extinct and Endangered aims to inform the public on the current crisis in insect decline and biodiversity loss, and to inspire a new appreciation for the beauty and importance of the tiny animals with whom we share the planet. Extinct and Endangered opened on June 22, 2022, at the American Museum of Natural History.
