Templo Libertad, Buenos Aires, Argentina - Part 8 of Series with Dr. Samuel Gruber

The Synagogue of the Israelite Congregation of the Argentinian Republic, often referred to as Templo Libertad, is a significant landmark in Buenos Aires, being the city's first synagogue. The construction began on 27 September 1897, spearheaded by the Jewish community residing in Buenos Aires. Over time, as the community grew, modifications were made to the building, and in 1932 it received its present characteristics, influenced by Romantic and Byzantine styles. The building was declared a National Historical Monument in 2000 and boasts notable architectural elements, such as a six-pointed Star of David, representations of the Ten Commandments, and twelve medallions representing the tribes of Israel. Inside, the synagogue can accommodate 1000 people, with three naves, granite tiled floor, and walls imitating stones. The prayer hall faces Jerusalem, and the apse contains a stained-glass window shedding light on the Torah ark. Additionally, a crypt in its lower floor serves various purposes, including hosting a Menorah and an organ above the Torah ark.
