ORIGINAL INFO: There’s more of gravy than of grave about this comic.

RUMINATIONS: There was this bizarre running thing for a while where people thought I hated the Silver Age. Maybe it came about because I’ve talked about how absolutely nuts the Silver Age could get, but that’s just a statement of the level of weirdness the comics evoked. Bear in mind, Superdickery basically came about because of Silver Age comic plots and covers – I’m not exactly breaking new ground by talking about its utter whackiness.

Still, though, this was a fun episode to do. Not just because I thought I thought it had a lot of good humor, but because it let me talk about stuff I don’t normally get to talk about. See, lots of my fellow critics when reviewing movies, TV shows, and games get to talk about production stories and oddities that occur with, say, foreign rereleases of media or the like. They get to talk about technical stuff and make it entertaining. With comics… well, it’s pretty much “This is its printing and that’s it,” so talking about color changes or the like, especially in reprints, is a rarity for me and I love it when I get that chance.

The only guaranteed thing I initially had for the storyline in terms of who the ghosts were going to be was my brother reprising his role as the Ghost of Christmas present. He did a great job the first time I ran through this, so I just wanted him back again for it. I’ve always loved the Muppet Christmas Carol interpretation of the character most - a jolly fellow who lives in the moment. It helps give each spirit a different sort of mood – the past as sorrowful or nostalgic, the present as happy, and the future as dark, sad, and uncertain. It’s one of the many reasons the story is so good, but most interpretations of the Present have him as a bit more serious and more restrained in his happiness aside from his initial appearance.
