STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Israelis attended the funeral of First Lieutenant Or Moses, 22, in the city of Ashdod on Sunday evening, after she was killed in the fighting against Hamas militants earlier in the day.
Mourners and military personnel joined the memorial service before Moses' coffin, wrapped in an Israeli flag, was lowered into the ground.
The Israeli government formally declared war Sunday and gave the green light for “significant military steps” to retaliate against Hamas for its surprise attack, as the military tried to crush fighters still in southern towns and intensified its bombardment of the Gaza Strip.
The death toll from the violence passed 1,000 dead and thousands wounded on both sides.
