10 Creepy Abandoned Amusement Parks
For most people, amusement parks are some of the happiest places with all the thrills readily available. But once they fall into disrepair, the parks are anything but fun.
Just like abandoned prisons or hospitals, abandoned theme parks have an eerie atmosphere over them. They’re awfully quiet, the once bright Ferris wheels are paler versions of their past selves, and the roller coasters no longer shoot around the park at top speed.
Here we are – top 10 creepy abandoned amusement parks.
#10 Pripyat Amusement Park, Ukraine
Pripyat features among the most known abandoned places and not just in the theme parks world. It also had one of the shortest operating periods, just a few days before it was gone forever with its various attractions never getting to be enjoyed.
The reason behind it is all well-known – the Chernobyl nuclear disaster that saw the neighboring areas evacuated.
The Pripyat amusement park had been slated to open officially on May 1, 1986, just in time to coincide with the May Day celebration. But this never happened. On April 26 the same year, a nuclear plant had a mishap leading to what is popularly known today as the Chernobyl disaster.
The park opened partially the next day in a move that was supposed to keep the people occupied in the wake of the unfortunate event. But soon enough evacuation orders arrived and everyone had to leave the town.
So the park was left to rot away with its unfinished Ferris wheel standing out from all the wasted debris below. The wheel has come to pretty much represent the now-abandoned town.
If you’re a fan of creepy places like this, the park is open to visitors for tours all year round.
#9 Camelot Theme Park, England
Camelot doubled up as a resort and theme park based on the story Camelot, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Interesting about the park is that it was set up on land that was once occupied by the largest lake in England, Martin Mere.
The park itself was opened in 1983 and was operated on a seasonal basis rather than being open full time. It featured three rides that included Excalibur, Whirlwind, and Knightmare that did just right in attracting visitors into the park.
It pulled on well into the 1990s but began experiencing tailwinds as the attendance dwindled year after year. Its woes worsened with the turn of the century as it received an abysmal rating in 2006 in a survey of healthy food available at popular tourist joints in the UK.
The numbers continued to decline and after being through several rough patches, the park was closed in 2012 and has been crumbling since then. There have also been several cases of vandalism and arson in the park.
One of the roller coasters, Whirlwind, was relocated while the others have been left to rot away.
Today, the future of the fallen park still remains in limbo as all applications for housing have been rejected.
#8 Lake Shawnee Amusement Park, USA
Lake Shawnee amusement park in West Virginia was closed in 1966 after being in operation for about 40 years. During this time, it witnessed at least six deaths that led to rumors of it being haunted. This is not surprising since, according to verified historical accounts, the land on which the park was constructed was the site of a massacre in the mid-18th century.
Nevertheless, the park was quite popular among the Mercer County locals who chose from an assortment of attractions to enjoy. They included a dance hall, a Ferris wheel, a race track, a swing ride, and an overnight stay cabin.
The park’s former employee tried re-opening it in 1987 but had to close it once again after a trove of archaeological material and human remains were unearthed. As an amusement park, it remains closed to this day it serves as grounds for paranormal tours for those enthusiastic in such activities.
#7 Taman Festival, Bali
The park was spearheaded by the Indonesian government and financed at a tune of $100 million. The whole point was to significantly boost the island’s tourism sector as well as offering thrilling family-friendly experiences.
Among its slated star attractions were the biggest swimming pool in Bali, a laser show, an inverted roller coaster, and a 3D cinema. An ambitious project for sure but the dream was never realized for some reason.
While the construction was a success, the park never opened its doors to visitors. Its existence was seemingly forgotten and bit by bit, it has been overrun by foliage, cobwebs, and general disrepair. The buildings are also said to be inhabited by bats and, worse, there could be crocodiles on the premises.
