Pope Leo Kicks Off Six-Day Spain Visit, Welcomed By Spanish Royal Family In Madrid | WATCH

On the first day of his visit to Spain, Pope Leo XIV was welcomed Saturday by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia at the Royal Palace in Madrid. Leo arrived for the solemn welcome ceremony in a car escorted by the Royal Horse Guard

Following the national anthems of Vatican City and Spain, and the traditional salute of cannon fire, Leo and Felipe reviewed the guard of honor, amidst cries of "Long live the Pope" from the thousands of people gathered to welcome the pontiff. Leo then accompanied the royals inside the palace. His first day ends with a prayer vigil with young people, many of whom will be witnessing their first pope on Spanish soil. The highlight of Leo’s visit to Madrid will be his speech Monday to both chambers of the Spanish Parliament. After Madrid, the other highlights of the trip include Leo’s visit midweek to Barcelona, where he will celebrate Mass in the Sagrada Familia basilica on the centenary of the death of its famed architect, Antoni Gaudí.
