Ambiano (Aldi) Countertop Ice Maker--They're All About The Same!!!
Originally recorded May 24, 2016.
This is a review of the Ambiano (Aldi brand) Countertop Ice Maker. I already own one of these that's similar, also from Aldi, under the "Kitchen Living" brand. In this video I will not only review the new product but also compare and contrast the two and their minor differences.
These machines, as I have explained many times before, all come out of the same factory in China, and other than styling differences, they really are all about the same and do the same job. You can see more about that phenomenon in my video "Harbor Freight By Any Other Name...It's Still The Same", seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEvlTKFmMoU
Ever since I've owned one of these, I'll never go back to making ice with ice cube trays ever again. They are small enough to not take up a tremendous amount of room, and produce a great deal of ice in a relatively short time period. Periodically I have parties, and I'll start the machine a day ahead of time and transfer the ice into a bag to place in the freezer, and get two bags full to start with. Then a couple of hours before the party I'll start the machine (just one!), and once the bucket in it is full, we're good to go. Generally we're heavy drinkers and use a considerable amount of ice, but one bucket full takes care of the first round of drinks, and keeps up with us throughout the party. If there's any lack of ice, there are 2 bags in the freezer ready to go. It's a much faster way of making ice, and because the cubes are smaller, they'll cool your drink off better than ice from ice cube trays. I was on the fence about buying one of these for quite a while, and once I bought one I haven't looked back since. In fact I haven't looked back so long that I bought another one, because this has become an indispensable tool in my kitchen.
Typically a batch of 9 cubes take 7 minutes, so you'll get about 77 cubes an hour. Figure on using a good 10 of them per drink, depending on how much ice you like. Of course if you're going to fill a whole glass you'll use a lot more. Start the machine early, check it periodically, and before you know it you'll have more ice than you know what to do with.
