Operation Carthage | Destroy The Shellhouse | Mosquito Raids in Copenhagen
This is the story of a daring but tragic RAF operation.
Operation Carthage took place in March of 1945
RAF Mosquito's and those of RAAF and RNZAF set off with P51 Mustang support to destroy the HQ of The Gestapo in Copenhagen housed in the Shellhouse.
The Shellhouse (Shell House) was being used by the Gestapo as not only a headquarters in Copenhagen but also a prison for captured Danish Resistance Fighters.
This made attacking the Shellhouse particularly hazardous as it was important to destroy the building but also to allow the Danish Resistance Fighters to escape.
Tragedy would strike however with a terrible loss of civilian life.
The De Havilland Mosquito was an exceptional, low level, attack fighter bomber of the Royal Air Force and carried out a number of low level, quick hit and run sorties during World War 2
The speed and agility of the De Havilland Mosquito made it ideally suited for a wide range of missions such as bombing and targeted strikes.
Due it being largely constructed of wood, it became known as 'The Wooden Wonder'.
