9 AMERICAN THINGS WE STILL DO WHILE LIVING IN DENMARK AS EXPATS
9 AMERICAN THINGS THAT EXPATS STILL DO: The Habits from the USA We Haven’t Given Up While Living in Denmark
#Denmark #Danmark #AmericansInDenmark
Today’s video is all about the American things that expats still do, even though we live in Denmark. Although we have lived in Denmark for over 4 years, old habits die hard! And so we will take you through the 9 SUPER American things we still do even though we moved to Copenhagen. These American habits are hard to kick, no matter how much we embrace Danish culture!
One American thing we still do, even though we are American expats living abroad is Pay Taxes
As American citizens we need to pay taxes no matter where we live but one advantage of the higher taxes in Denmark is that we can deduct the Danish taxes. But we still need to file taxes every year.
Another American thing we do while living abroad is drinking sugary coffee. Danes love their coffee, but it’s usually black or espresso. Maybe a flat white but we are both suckers for a nice salted caramel latte. We still drink Starbucks even though we are expats.
Even though we are living abroad, we still celebrate American holidays. One of the best parts of living abroad is getting two sets of holidays! We have imported the fun American holidays - having fun 4th of July barbeques and Thanksgiving (but as “Taksgiving”). It’s fun to share American traditions with Danish friends.
Even though we live in Denmark, we still play a lot of American drinking games. In Denmark, it is common to play dice games while you are having beers with friends, but in the US drinking games tend to be a bit more competitive. We especially love playing beer pong in Denmark.
One of the things that Europeans say about Americans is that we are loud. And it’s true, and it’s a bad habit from the USA that we cannot get out of even though we are living an expat life. It is just a part of our American DNA - you can hear us across the room.
One American habit we still embrace is taking short holidays and city breaks. We did this originally because we only expected to be in Denmark for 6-9 months - we talk about this in the most recent @Robe Trotting Live Stream found here: https://youtu.be/78gZnUecdfE
These are often just over a weekend. Although we have much more vacation time in Denmark versus the USA, we still have the mindset of going somewhere for a long weekend instead of a full week
We only learned of this one recently, but Americans have a habit of using forks as knives - and so do we! It’s just so much easier to just use the edge of a fork! Thanks for letting us know about how we hold and use a fork after watching the skits in our video, Things Danes Say That Seem Rude but are Actually Harmless, found here: https://youtu.be/8qJFY5zPbU8
Even though we are living abroad, as American expats we still call the last letter of the alphabet “zee” instead of “zed”. It’s just how we learn and even though we may be the only English-speaking country to do this - it just sticks.
Even though we now live in Europe, we still have no idea how to use the metric system. Unfortunately, Americans are stuck on the British system of measurement and we still have not fully adjusted to the metric system as Americans living in Denmark - but we should!
