This a video tutorial about how to get though massive trap brass & horn stabs in Ableton Live!

You know all about these huge trap bass stabs. You hear them all over the place. Trap, Hip Hop, EDM, Future Bass… you name it. In this video tutorial I aim to show you how I make mine. From the Brass instrument I use all the way to how I go about processing those sounds.

First thing, and this is arguably the most important step here and anywhere, is getting the highest quality sounds to start with. It’s really difficult to turn a turd into a platinum record.

For most of my brass needs, I go to Frozo by Heavyocity. It has spectacular sounding traditional brass instruments and for something like this the Full Ensemble is perfect.

Also, pro tip here, is to make sure you use about 8 hits. Forzo has a 6 slot round robin which gives you a slightly different performance for each slot. These subtle differences really help push production value to the next level.

I use the Staccato Articulation and, for this project, I used MIDI notes on F0, F1 and F2. Make sure all the effects (Delay, Reverb) are not turned on. We want a super clean signal. We will add those later after we shape and color the sound a bit.

When you are ready, freeze, duplicate and flatten the duplicate.

As this is a sample library in Kontakt, it’s a recording of real people playing real instruments. So, the even the Staccato Articulation has a slow-ish attack. What we want to do, to get a solid and beefy impact is cut that off in the clip editor. Just slide the starting position over to a good spot.

Trimming that front portion off is a good start to getting maximum impact. However, we can push it further by using a Transient Shaper. I use the one from Kilohearts, as it’s easy to use and does a great job.

Next, I like to use 3 plugins by Soundtoys.

I use Devil-Loc Delux to add some warm saturation / distortion to the signal. It’s a limiter meant to get massive drums, but it will work here for our stabs. I’m using the Delux version, but the baby brother Devil-Loc, while missing a few features, has the same saturation and distortion algorithms if you are looking to save few bucks.

I prefer the Crunch on these brass hits with a Fast release time.

After that, I like to push it further with Decapitator. Adding more upper-frequency harmonic content and a bit of grit to make it stand out even better in the mix. Style E seems to fit best for this particular project.

Finally, I use Little Plate to add the reverb. This plugin is super easy to use and sounds soooo good! Fun fact; Little Plate is on my default reverb return track in Ableton Live… that’s how much I dig it!

That’s it! If you followed along with these same VST Plugins or used your own, you should have a large brass stab that is perfect for any urban genres and beyond!
