Learn how to tune drums here

Step 1 : Tuning Your Snares (samples)

I have already covered this in an earlier tutorial on tuning any samples. Please, go tune a bunch of snares, or kicks, or percussion, label them correctly, crop them and come back to step 2.

Step 2 : Importing Samples into Sampler

In the places window navigate to where your folder is containing the tuned and labeled hits. Select all of them at once and drop them into Sampler's window that says, "Drop Sample Here". Don't worry that the sample is singular, this beast can handle a lot of samples at once!

Step 3 : Clicking the Zone Button

If you look at the picture above you will see a little left pointing triangle. The triangle seems to be pointing to a word Zone. Click it. That will expand a second window above the device window where all of your samples will be shown.

Step 4 : Setting the Root Key of Your Samples

In that new window containing all your samples click on the top one. You will see it displayed in the Sampler window. You now want to go to the RootKey parameter in the bottom left of the device and change that to whatever you labeled the sample as. For example. If the you labeled the snare SNARE 1 - A2 you will change the RootKey to A2.

Repeat that process for all of the samples you have imported.

After you have completed this you will have tuned snares! There is still work to be done though!!

Step 5 : Adjusting the Velocity Sensitivity

We will want to adjust the velocity sensitivity for all of our samples now. That way they respond properly when you are using a keyboard, pad, or velocity nodes in a midi clip.

I am going to make the full velocity hit at 100, instead of 127. The reason for this? When you add a new midi clip in Ableton Live the default velocity value is 100. This way, I don't have to remember to go in and change the velocity when using my Tuned Snare Rack. ;)

The cool thing about Sampler is that your can simply select all and adjust this parameter for all the samples at the same time!

To do this you need to first select the Vel tab. It is located above the sample titles in the Zone window. Then click on any one of the samples and press Cntl+A to select all. With all the samples selected move your cursor to the thinner line above the the thicker line on the gird. Pull over the right until the small number box reads 100. You should see a ramp like the ones pictured below.

Step 6 : Setting up the Zone Selectors

Now we need to go into the Sel tab, where we will find the Zone selector! I am only using 32 samples. The quickest, easiest, and best way to sort these out is by right clicking and selecting "Distribute Ranges Equally". Now the Zones will be distributed easily, which will help us in setting up the final instrument rack!

Step 7 : Setting up the Instrument Rack

Now most of the work inside the Sampler is done. Right click on the title bar and select Group. This will embed the Sampler inside an instrument rack. The only thing we need to map to a macro from the Sampler itself is the Zone Selector. It is that little orange tick mark above the Zones in the Sel window. Hover your mouse over it and right click. Select Map to Macro 1. Now, go to the Macro Knobs of the rack and rename Macro 1 to something like "Snare Selector".

Now you are done! You can play a midi note on A2 and cycle through all your snare sounds, knowing fill well that each is hitting on the A2 note of the scale!!!
