Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves | Tactics Explained

Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves in tactics explained. Under the management of Nuno Espirito Santo, Wolverhampton Wanderers have become the Premier League’s surprise package this season and currently sit 7th in England’s top flight. But how are Wolves on the verge of making the Europa League?

The midlands club have had massive investment from Chinese conglomerate group, Fosun International, to get them promoted into the Premier League. The consortium has drafted in Jorge Mendes to bring some of Europe’s top talents to Molineux. Unlike other clubs with massive investment like Chelsea and Manchester City, Wolves seem to be investing well instead of signing big name players like Robinho and Andriy Shevchenko for big money. Wolves have seen a number of the World’s top young players join in recent years including Ruben Neves, Diogo Jota and Jonny alongside seasoned professionals - Joao Mourinho, Rui Patricio, Wily Boly and Raul Jimenez.

The brilliance of Nuno Espirito Santo has been his ability to blend foreign imports with players already at the club and players from the Wolves academy. With the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White, Conor Coady, Matt Doherty and Ryan Bennett. He’s also instilled supreme work rates into his players and his small squad has a real family mentality where they fight for every ball

In the Championship, Santo tended to play a 3-4-3 but the added quality of the Premier League meant that Wolves’ two man midfield pairing struggled to dominate in midfield. So Nuno switched it up, moving to more of a 3-5-2. This has allowed Wolves to control games with Neves at the base of midfield and Moutinho and Dendoncker sitting just ahead.

Although the 3-5-2 features less attackers, has provided Wolves with a better base to attack from. Diogo Jota struggled in the 3-4-2-1 in the Premier League but now that he’s more central, the Portuguese international has struck up a fantastic relationship with his Mexican partner, Raul Jimenez. It’s also provided Wolves with a fantastic platform to counter attack from. They drop into a deep 5-3-2 and use the front two to press the opposition’s defensive midfielders before breaking into the channels.

Wolves are tactically a very interesting proposition and have been a fantastic addition to the Premier League. If they continue to invest smartly and can keep this band of players together, surely it won’t be long before they’re challenging for the top four and the Champions League places?

But what do you guys think? How will Wolves fair next season? Can they mount a title challenge in the near future and will they be able to keep their star players?
