PURE HEART | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (February 12, 2023)

Today is the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time; and in today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims: I have come not to abolish the law or the prophets but to fulfill it.

The law and the prophets are a reference to the entirety of the Scripture. His proclamation then tells us that in the fulness of time everything that was written and prophesied will be fulfilled. And as the one who will fulfill it, Jesus teaches us to do something more.

Jesus affirms the law condemning murder, but he also cautions us against anger and directs us towards peace and reconciliation. He affirms the law condemning adultery, but he also calls us to root out lustful desires and their instruments. This is a reminder to all of us to get to the root of sin in our heart. It is anger that prompts one to murder the other. It is lust that prompts one to engage in illicit relations. Only a pure heart fulfills the law.
