Pattern Techniques for Affinity

1. New Pattern Layer from Selection
This is the most direct method. By selecting a layer or a specific area of an image and navigating to the Pixel menu, you can generate a "Pattern Layer." This layer is unique because it automatically tiles the selection across the entire canvas. [00:13]

2. Mirroring and Seamless Tiling
To avoid harsh edges where tiles meet, you can use the Mirror option found in the context toolbar. This flips every other tile, creating a more organic and seamless transition between repeats. [00:22]

3. Marquee Tool Patterns
You aren't limited to the entire image. By using the Rectangular or Elliptical Marquee Tools, you can "cherry-pick" specific textures or colors from a photo to serve as the base for your pattern. [00:29]

4. Merging Pattern Layers
You can stack multiple pattern layers, adjust their individual rotation and scale, and then merge them. By right-clicking and selecting Merge Selected, you bake them into a single pattern layer that can then be further manipulated as one unit. [01:17]

5. Bitmap Fill Conversion
For external assets (like a JPEG or PNG file), you can create a New Fill Layer, set the type to Bitmap, and import your file. While this isn't a "Pattern Layer" initially, you can Rasterize it to turn it into a standard Pattern Layer, giving you full access to the pattern-specific Move Tool controls. [01:25]
