France, 1944. Private Thomas Welch was in a foxhole when a German artillery shell collapsed the ground above him. He was buried under two feet of soil. No one saw it happen. It was dark. He had no shovel. He began to dig with his bare hands. Slowly. Fighting panic. Fighting the weight pressing on his chest. It took forty minutes.
