Rock Hounding Geodes - Az
We take a day trip to Payson to look for Geodes! We find them up near the beautiful Geode Hill. We had a blast looking around and enjoying the area. This is a protected land where you are not allowed to dig, so it's more of a Easter egg hunt. We found a rock with tons of broken open bits around it that other people left. We broke some of those "leavings" near the end of the video plus some that we collected. Happy to have some whole pieces on display in my home now. I love gifting the broken findings to my friends.
WHAT
Geodes can form in any cavity, but the term is usually reserved for more or less rounded formations in igneous and sedimentary rocks. They can form in gas bubbles in igneous rocks, such as vesicles in basaltic lava; or, as in the American Midwest, in rounded cavities in sedimentary formations. After rock around the cavity hardens, dissolved silicates and/or carbonates are deposited on the inside surface. Over time, this slow feed of mineral constituents from groundwater or hydrothermal solutions allows crystals to form inside the hollow chamber. Bedrock containing geodes eventually weathers and decomposes, leaving them present at the surface if they are composed of resistant material such as quartz.
When cut in half, visible bands corresponding to varied stages of precipitation may at times show patterns that reveal points of fluid entry into the cavity and/or varied colors corresponding to changes in chemistry.

BE THE GOOD
Be sure to not leave any trash behind. Help be part of the good and keep these areas clean. If you see a piece of trash be sure to pick it up and take it out. Be nice to the plants and animals.
WARNING
I'm not an expert- just someone that loves nature. I took a class in college and have some basic books to help me identify things but most of my guesses are wrong because I'm still learning. We look up each area before visiting so that we understand the rules. Please don't rely on me for actual education, there are MUCH better channels that specialize in this.
