Arunachal Pradesh-Itanagar: Chimpu Waste Dumping Ground. Organisation warns no dumping of garbage.

The Arunachal Pradesh Swach Abhiyan Sangh (APSAS) has expressed strong resentment over the alleged inaction of the state government in relocating the solid waste treatment plant at Chimpu, raising serious concerns over public health and environmental safety in the area.
Speaking to reporters, APSAS chairperson Tunun Soki said the solid waste treatment plant at Chimpu, established in 2013, has been causing severe inconvenience to residents living in the vicinity due to alleged improper waste disposal practices.
She alleged that residents living near the existing garbage dumping ground and the adjacent cremation and burial site in Chimpu are being exposed to hazardous waste owing to mismanagement and violations of prescribed health and safety norms.
Describing the situation as a serious threat to public health, sanitation and environmental safety, Soki informed that the organisation has urged the government to relocate the dumping site to the notified area within 30 days.
“If the issue is not addressed within the stipulated timeframe, the organisation, along with local residents, will be compelled to resort to democratic forms of protest to safeguard the interests and well-being of the people,” she said, adding that residents would not allow further dumping of waste if their concerns remain unresolved.
Expressing concern over the issue, APSAS vice chairman Niapung Hengam said the organisation has also submitted a representation to the Commissioner of the Urban Development Department. He added that APSAS had earlier submitted a representation to the Governor seeking immediate intervention in the matter.
According to Hengam, the Governor had subsequently directed the Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) to address the issue. However, he alleged that no visible action or update has been provided so far.
The organisation further claimed that despite repeated appeals and demands for the relocation of the dumping ground and shifting of the burial site, the authorities concerned have failed to take any concrete steps.
APSAS also stated that the government had reportedly earmarked around 30,000 square metres of land for urban solid waste management for a period of 25 years.
Meanwhile, Sangh secretary general Tatung Taje alleged that not only household garbage but also medical waste is being dumped in the area, which violates government norms. He further pointed out that the dumping site is located adjacent to NH-415.
Taje alleged that garbage is being dumped outside the designated area within the Chimpu locality, in violation of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for urban waste disposal.
“The residents in the vicinity have been facing multiple health and environmental issues, including foul air, water contamination and the spread of diseases allegedly resulting from continuous dumping of waste in the locality,” he added.
