Title: Atmospheric influence on melt and hydrofracturing-induced collapse on ice shelves

Abstract: Against a backdrop of ongoing climatic warming in recent decades, several ice shelves on the Antarctic Peninsula have collapsed via hydrofracture, including the Prince Gustav, Larsen A and Larsen B ice shelves. We know that the first-order cause of these types of collapses is melting at the surface, but the drivers of that surface melting remain largely unquantified. In this talk I will discuss modelling work that centres on the Larsen C ice shelf - which neighbours the now-absent Larsen A and B ice shelves - before zooming out to explore what might happen to ice shelves across the whole Antarctic continent with ongoing warming. Understanding the atmospheric processes that contribute to surface melting can provide valuable context for making predictions of the future fate of ice shelves, and of sea level rise.
