Inside a 6th Century Souterrain at Drumena Cashel #irishhistory #ancientireland #cashel #history

Exploring the T-shaped souterrain at Drumena Cashel in County Down. This stone-built underground passage dates to the Early Christian period and likely served as a place for food storage or as a refuge during raids.

The video begins inside the 11-meter passage and transitions out into the main enclosure of the cashel, an early medieval farmstead. The drystone walls of the fort are approximately 3 meters thick and were partially restored in the 1920s following archaeological excavations.

It is now one of the best examples of an early medieval cashel in Ireland.

Location: Near Castlewellan, County Down.
