British toddler hears for 1st time after landmark gene therapy
Playtime and story time have taken on a whole new meaning for one British toddler.
Opal Sandy was born with auditory neuropathy due to a fault in the OTOF gene.
At 18 months old, she is the first British patient and the youngest child ever to be treated with a breakthrough gene therapy – and she can now hear for the first time in her life.
Crystal Goomansingh has more on the breakthrough therapy and the hopes that the promising results in Opal’s case could help others with severe hearing loss.
