This Jerry Jeff Walker vinyl record from 1972 started it all. Recorded mostly live in Austin, TX and New York, this LP epitomizes the sound of the 'Outlaw Country' movement happening in South Texas in the early 70's. Everyone knows his record 'Viva Terlingua', released the following year and mostly recorded live at Luckenbach, TX but this self-titled record is equally great. In fact, it's a prime example of Jerry Jeff's mantra - Ragged but Right - and it stands the test of time as one of his best albums.

The audio and images in this video are from my personal copy of this album, for personal use and commentary only. Up until recently, this entire album had never really been available on any streaming platforms, and I presume that is due to some sort of legal entanglements with the master recordings. However, in the weeks following Jerry Jeff's passing, this album, has appeared on Spotify. My original intent with this 'remastered' version was to use Audacity software to boost the audio levels and make them more equalized. It’s an aggressive mix so it get a little ‘hot’ in some areas, but the end result is a version of this record that has a much higher volume levels... plus this version has the vintage feel because you can still hear the subtle 'cracks and pops' of a vinyl record. THIS IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR LISTENING TO THE ORIGINAL RECORDINGS. (GIVE UMG & GEFFEN THEIR MONEY BY PURCHASING OR STREAMING THIS MUSIC ON PLATFORMS WHERE IT'S AVAILABLE) The original master seems to be very loud in some areas, and very quiet in others - and with a uniformly low overall volume level, almost as if the mastering of the original recording had been rushed. I’m no sound expert - but I dig this record immensely and have for decades. It deserves a re-issue and a proper listen. Why it’s become somewhat forgotten is beyond me. In my opinion, it is one of the brightest spots in Jerry Jeff’s entire discography, yet it’s been swept under the rug somehow. I hope this vid stays on here but have a bad feeling the legal hawks are gonna descend upon this and take it down... again... Until then, enjoy!
