Workplace Restoration - From Conflict to Productivity
Do you know how work teams get divided in conflict or during times of uncertainty or change? One valuable service I offer helps teams PLAY NICE in their sandbox, by restoring positive relationships for all members to move through the chaos and onward after a stressful event.
A workplace restoration is an inclusive process to support people through rebuilding workplace relationships and culture after a major disruption such as prolonged conflict, investigation, accusations of harassment, bullying, lateral violence, significant change or sub-standard behaviours.
The two most common workplace interventions are investigations and restorations. Bill 168 created an incline in the need for investigations, while Bill 132 requires employers to use competent professionals to investigate incidents. This creates a complexity that requires external sources, yet third party intervention can be disruptive and intensify conflict, creating a growing need for a workplace restoration. In my experience, after investigations are complete, teams need help to heal the emotional injury in those ‘opened cans of worms’, to find closure, co-create new commitments and get back on track.
I facilitate this re-connection with the circle approach, which has a long history in many cultures as a way to resolve social conflict with shared responsibility, authentic conversation, honesty, listening, understanding, and empathy. We find commonality, determine ideal working relationships, and culture, and empower each other to implement it.
Without restoration, employees take stress or sick leave, or leave officially, sometimes by wave of mass exodus. The opportunity to recruit becomes challenging due to poor reputation of workplace morale.
A workplace restoration is very effective to reconnect teams after any significant change or disruption in relationships that has plagued employees with fear, doubt, stress or lack of trust.
In the end, participants learn to turn the crisis that lead to the need for restoration, into a proactive opportunity to manage conflict better in the future.
In my opinion, the best time to have a workplace restoration is before the need for a formal investigation. They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of medicine. Restoration can be the ounce of prevention that prevents a long and arduous process of investigation.
