Saving a CRUSTY 1969 Beach Bomb… with Zinc Plating! (Full Restoration)

This one showed up rough.

A 1969 Volkswagen Beach Bomb that Chris pulled from a random grab bag… and yeah, at first glance, it didn’t look like much. Heavy oxidation, crust everywhere, and honestly one of the worst bases I’ve seen in a while.

But here’s the twist — this is actually a valuable casting.

So instead of just cleaning it up, we went full send on this one… including a full zinc plating process to bring the body back to life.

The goal was simple: take something that looked completely cooked and turn it into something a collector would actually be proud to have on the shelf.

That meant:
• Stripping years of oxidation
• Multiple zinc plating passes to fill pitting
• Careful polishing to restore that smooth finish
• And bringing it all back together with a clean Spectraflame look

Even the base needed serious intervention — we’re talking chemical treatment just to get it back from the dead.

In the end, this thing went from absolute crust to a proper restored side-loading Beach Bomb… and honestly, the transformation speaks for itself.
