*Cell Wall*
Definition: The cell wall is a non-living structure found in prokaryotic cells and plant cells.

*Characteristics:*

*Non-living part of the cell.*
Present in prokaryotic cells (made of peptidoglycan) and plant cells (made of cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose).
Thicker and more rigid than the plasma membrane.
Freely permeable, allowing substances to pass through.
Functions:

*Maintains the shape of the cell.*
Provides protection to the plasma membrane.
Prevents desiccation (loss of water).
Aids in the transport of substances in and out of the cell.

*3. Plastids*
Definition: Plastids are organelles found in plant cells involved in the synthesis and storage of food.

Types:

Chloroplasts: Green plastids responsible for photosynthesis.
Chromoplasts: Colored plastids that provide color to flowers and fruits.
Leucoplasts: Colorless plastids that store starch, proteins, and fats.
Characteristics:

*Usually spherical or discoidal in shape.*
Double-membrane-bound organelles with their own DNA and ribosomes.
Functions:

Chloroplasts manufacture food through photosynthesis.
Chromoplasts provide color to flowers and fruits.
Leucoplasts store various substances.

*4. Lysosomes*
Definition: Lysosomes are spherical organelles found in animal cells that contain digestive enzymes.

Characteristics:

Formed by the Golgi apparatus.
Small and spherical in shape, acting like pockets within the cell.
Contain digestive enzymes that break down waste materials.
Functions:

Digest foreign substances and worn-out cell structures.
Provide protection against harmful bacteria and viruses.
Help keep the cell clean by digesting waste materials.

*5. Vacuoles*
Definition: Vacuoles are storage organelles found in both plant and animal cells.

Characteristics:

Plant cells typically have one large central vacuole, while animal cells have smaller, temporary vacuoles.
Can contain liquid or solid substances.
Functions:

Store nutrients and waste products.
Help maintain turgor pressure in plant cells.

*6. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)*
Definition: The endoplasmic reticulum is a network of tubelike structures that extends from the nuclear membrane to the plasma membrane.

Types:

Rough ER: Studded with ribosomes, involved in protein synthesis and transport.
Smooth ER: Lacks ribosomes, involved in lipid synthesis and detoxification.
Functions:

Provides internal support to the cell.
Assists in the transport of substances between the nuclear membrane and plasma membrane.
Synthesizes proteins and lipids.

*7. Golgi Bodies*
Definition: Golgi bodies, also known as Golgi apparatus or Golgi complex, are membrane-bound structures involved in modifying, packaging, and dispatching substances.

Characteristics:

Discovered by Camillo Golgi.
Composed of membrane-bound structures arranged parallel to each other.
Functions:

Store, modify, package, and dispatch substances, including proteins and lipids.
Help in the formation of lysosomes.

*8. Ribosomes*
Definition: Ribosomes are small, round organelles found in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

Characteristics:

Extremely small and dense.
Composed of ribonucleoprotein (RNA and proteins).
Present in both prokaryotic (70S) and eukaryotic (80S) cells.
Functions:

The primary function of ribosomes is protein synthesis.
