CNC milling an Autococker body (Nummech Pyrococker)
How is an Autococker body made? Watch and find out!
I've been striving to make a more detailed presentation for body machining for at least two years now, so this is likely as much detail as I can provide. The remaining portions of the production process are too difficult to film (and pretty boring).
These components are fairly complicated due to the assembly of body items milled simultaneously, so don't be afraid to watch the first section a few times. I left out a LOT of details on the process because there just isn't enough time. Feel free to ask if you have specific questions.
The products shown here are Nummech's slug bodies which are then transformed into Pyrococker bodies, either "full length" or "mid-block" bolt style. The full-length bodies have a seamless back block and also come with a pyro beavertail (not shown in the video). Alternately, midblock bodies don't use a back block or beavertail, instead using a bolt sled which is briefly shown.
Notes for machining nerds:
- Most of the footage was captured using a GoPro Hero5 mounted inside Hirudin's CRACE coolant-resistant case, attached inside the machine using a solid mount. This is actually my first Hero5 video, where previously I used a Hero4. I captured external audio for the "blanking" video clips, but audio for the 3d surfacing footage was raw out of the Hero5 (you hear the air blast hisssss).
- When filming, I modified the tools and processes to run mostly without coolant. The coolant-wicking case makes it easy to see with coolant, but I still prefer to film dry to enable a better view.
- The mill being used is a 2014 Haas DT1 with an HRC-160 4th axis. We use a combination of different CNC mills during manufacturing, but the final cosmetics are completed on this machine.
You want to buy a Pyrococker body? well they're not for sale yet, but they will become available at www.nummech.com
