Recommended Repertoire #2 – ‘Fell in Love with a Boy’ by Joss Stone (BASS COVER)

This video is the second in a new monthly series in which I will be performing a song that I consider to be a valuable piece in the bass guitarist's repertoire.

This track features Adam Blackstone on bass and is a great line to play because of the funk swing feel. It’s also a challenging piece to read and an excellent study in using chord tones to create effective lines.

When recording this line, I used a Sei Flamboyant 5-string bass and favoured the neck pickup slightly. I recorded the line through an MXR Envelope Filter, with the mix set quite low. I believe Adam used a MoogerFooger Bass MuRF pedal on the recording. I recorded direct into Logic and applied some light compression digitally. I also boosted the low mids at around 176Hz.

If you're interested in learning this great line, my advice – as always – is to transcribe it for yourself! You'll learn a lot about the song's structure - and the way Adam uses chord tones and chromatic passing notes to create effective lines – in the process.
