NETHERLANDS: 'Oostkerk' - church in Middelburg (Zeeland)

Oostkerk is a Protestant church in Middelburg (Netherlands), build from 1648 to 1667. It has a characteristic round dome.

The church was designed by Bartholomeus Drijfhout and Pieter Post and was built between 1648 and 1667. After Drijfhout died in 1651, the building was continued under the Leiden architect Arent van 's-Gravesande, who had just completed the Marekerk in Leiden.

For the construction heavy oak was used, originating from the forests near Wezel, but wood for the foundation came from Norway. The foundation was bricked with bricks from Zeeland, and for the remaining construction bricks from Utrecht were used.

Due to less churchgoers, overdue maintenance and financial burdens, the Protestant Municipality of Middelburg (PGM) decided to dispose of the Oostkerk and the last service was held on January 8, 2017. For the much needed restoration, two million euros was needed and a new manager. The new manager was found in Stichting Monumenten Bezit (SMB), founded by the National Monument Organization. The required two million was divided so that the SMB, the PGM, the province of Zeeland and the municipality of Middelburg each contribute half a million. The church is now used for concerts, lectures, exhibitions and similar events.
