Speyer Cathedral - UNESCO World Heritage Site

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Speyer Cathedral is considered to be the world's best-preserved Romanesque style cathedral. It was built in the 11th century during the Investiture Controversy, when the German kings were disagreeing with the Pope over who had the authority to appoint bishops and other religious leaders. To demonstrate his power, the local King erected the enormous and grand Speyer Cathedral, despite the town only having 500 inhabitants at the time. Despite a fairly plain interior, this was a fascinating visit.
