AEGIS Legal Minute | Ontario Rent Increase Cap: 2.5% and Why Written Agreements Matter

In Ontario, the rent increase cap for 2023 and 2024 is 2.5%, meaning landlords are not permitted to raise rent beyond this limit.
If a rent increase is agreed to by both landlord and tenant, it should be documented in writing and signed by both parties. Generally, once both sides consent and sign a written agreement, the tenant typically cannot dispute the percentage of the increase later (even with a new lease document).
Clear, signed paperwork is a key step to protect both parties and reduce future disputes.
