Carbohydrates- Definition, classification, examples and functions
Definition- polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones or compounds which produce them on hydrolysis
Monosaccharides- simple sugar unit, can't be hydrolyzed further
further classified on the basis of number of carbon atoms and functional group
Disaccharides- lactose, maltose, sucrose
Oligosaccharides- Rhamnose, stachyose, raffinose
Polysaccharides- Homopolysaccharides and Heteropolysaccharides
Homopolysaccharides
1. Starch
2. Glycogen
3. Cellulose
4. Dextrin
5. Dextran
6. Chitin
7. Inulin
Heteropolysaccharides
1. Agar
2. Agarose
3. Hyaluronic acid
4. Heparin
5. Chondroitin sulfate
6. Dermatan sulfate
7. Heparan sulfate
