Helping Child Workers and Pregnant Women Ben Thahn Market Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam

Here's my last night in Vietnam helping poor child workers, beggars, and poor young mothers and pregnant women at the Ben Thanh Night Market in Ho Chi Minh City aka Saigon.

As a fan of Troy Nguyen's videos where he helps poor people, I was devastated to hear that Linh, one of those children who sells souvenirs at the market, dropped out of school because her mom took out some big loans despite getting hundreds of $$$ from Troy's donators to go to school. What happened? I went to the market to find out.

It was a week before Christmas and there were no child workers there so I left empty handed with no story. While helping a mother and her children, one with a mental disability, who were begging on the side of the street, other souvenir sellers showed up and wanted baby formula too. We agreed to meet there again and that's when I met Ang.

Ang's mom has a corner where she sells hats. She has a skin condition that makes it lumpy. Her dad got in a motorbike accident and is messed up in the head somehow. Ang says she is there everyday trying to sell things to souvenirs. They can't be rich. I wish I knew more about them and their lives but there was a communication issue.

We found the young mother and baby and handed out baby formula. It was surprisingly expensive, like $15 for a big tin can. I thought I might have fell for the baby formula scam at first as one motorbike driver volunteered to take me a place that was far away but fortunately, that wasn't the case. It's expensive there to the point where the government had to put price caps on them. I gave away some extra that I got but for some reason, half of those souvenir sellers, who were all women, were all pregnant! I didn't want to give it to mothers with very young babies or pregnant women for fear they would be formula only babies as breast feeding has been shown to better as it delivers antibodies and better nutrients but I didn't have the heart to say no.

I treated Ang for helping. She shared a rice dish and coconut smoothie with her mom and was happy about that. Ang kept shaking my hand though, I think that's because I reached out and shook her mom's hand first. I was re-watching some of Troy's older videos from a few years ago and I think I found an earlier version of Ang. Her hair cut is the same and her facial features looks really similar.

I had a blast running amok in Ho Chi Minh city. Wish I could do more and make more videos and get into the nitty and gritty. Can't wait to go back.

Troy, if you're seeing this, check Ang out! She might have a one-up compared to those other kids in the Tan Hua crew as her mom is unique and her dad is disabled or something. Thanks for watching and peace be with you.
