The Faint Glow That Still Decides How We Measure the Universe
A nearly uniform microwave glow fills the sky, carrying a record from a universe only 380,000 years old. It is the oldest detectable light we can study directly, and modern cosmology still depends on what it reveals.
Why the Cosmic Microwave Background Remains the Most Important Light in Space begins at recombination, when cooling allowed protons and electrons to form neutral hydrogen and the opaque plasma became transparent at the surface of last scattering. Detected in 1965 by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson with the Holmdel Horn Antenna, this radiation became decisive evidence for the Big Bang over steady-state theory. COBE later showed its spectrum is an almost perfect 2.725 K blackbody, while WMAP and Planck mapped anisotropies and acoustic peaks that fixed the universe’s age near 13.8 billion years, its near-flat geometry, and the proportions of baryonic matter, dark matter, and dark energy.
