The Lost Stoke-on-Trent Tunnel
A short trip north on the Trent & Mersey Canal from Incinerator Bridge No 109 to the Caldon Canal at Etruria Junction. In 2004/2005 the 1960's Stoke ring road was being rebuilt but unfortunately the canal was in the way. The solution? Simple, move the canal through a temporary tunnel resembling (as our older viewers will appreciate) an elongated, WW2 Anderson Shelter. Once the road works were finished they restored the canal to its original course and buried the tunnel. One wonders what future archeologists will make of this.
