Deep Vein Thrombosis (How to handle DVT's)
DVT is a blood clot in the deep vein vs the superficial veins. The significance here is that the deep veins have a higher propensity to develop into an pulmonary embolism, which is a clot that is now in the lungs.
Because of this, DVTs will be managed differently when comparing that to a superficial thrombosis. With a superficial clot, you don't really need much intervention as the clot usually dissolves on its own. DVTs require anticoagulation, which we'll touch on later in the lecture.
DVTs can develop in both the upper and lower extremities, with lower extremity DVT being a lot more common.
Lower extremity sites include the gastrocnemius, popliteal, femoral or iliac veins. The iliac will be the most common site that leads to a pulmonary embolism.
When they develop in the upper extremities, it will most commonly be in the axillary and subclavian vein.
So, let's get in to the specifics.
