Tatarstan: Great Bolgar
The ancient monument of Muslim culture in Tatarstan is located 180 km from Kazan on the Volga river steep bank. In the 10th century the Volga Bulgars adopted Islam here, and the city of Bolgar became the capital of the Volga Bulgaria.
Since 2014 the ancient city of Great Bolgar has been included into UNESCO World Heritage List. The architecture monuments of the 13-14th centuries are carefully preserved here. In the museums one can learn the history of the ancestors of modern Kazan Tatars and see the world largest printed Quran, entered into the Guinness Book of Records. The main attractive landmark of the museum-preserve is the majestic White Mosque.
