"Зуун лангийн жороо луус" - Anthem of the Great Mongol State (Bogd Khanate) 1911-1924

"Zún langín joró lús" was the first anthem of an independent Mongolia, officially adopted in 1915. Following Prime Minister Namnansuren's diplomatic visit to St. Petersburg, where he heard European ceremonial music for the first time, 10 members from the Mongolian Army were chosen and trained in playing musical instruments. Their first performance to the Bogd Khan impressed him to the point where he desired Mongolia to adopt its own national anthem. The lyrics to the anthem were based on a popular Mongolian Folk song, and the music was composed by A. V. Kadlets, the conductor of the Mariinsky Theater.

Mongolia declared its independence in 1911 from the Manchu-led Qing Empire after its collapse in the Xinhai Revolution. Mongolian nobles and ecclesiastical officials installed the 8th Bogd Gegeen as theocratic sovereign. Born in Tibet, he was the third most important person in the Tibetan Buddhist hierarchy as the 8th Jebtsundamba Khutuktu, below only the Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama, and therefore also known as the "Bogd Lama" or "Holy Ruler". He was the spiritual leader of Outer Mongolia's Tibetan Buddhism. The only country to recognize Mongolia as a legitimate state was Tibet, which also declared independence from Qing China. Tibet and Mongolia would sign a friendship treaty and grant mutual recognition. Tensions between Russia and China were briefly settled with the Treaty of Kyakhta in 1915, where Mongolia was recognized as an "autonomous" part of China, and Mongolia could not conclude international treaties with foreign countries regarding political and territorial questions. However, the Chinese directly occupied and revoked Mongolia's autonomy amidst the the chaos of the Bolshevik takeover of Russia in 1919, lasting until March 1921, when Chinese troops in Urga were routed by Baron Ungern's White Russian forces. These, in turn, were defeated by the Red Army and its Mongolian allies by June 1921.
