3 Steve Lukather Licks From 1990

Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Steve Lukather Licks From 1990. As I mentioned in this episode, I'm a HUGE Steve Lukather/Toto fan and have followed him and his music since I was in high school.

While I did create a Three-For-All lesson surrounding him a couple of years ago and a Toto-themed Chordplay episode last year, I recently located this great footage from 1990 featuring Steve and decided it was time to look at some more of his slick ideas.

The licks/ideas shared in this lesson came from a live concert in Paris, France from 1990, which was truly an inspired and energetic performance to watch. Steve is simply on fire the entire time, singing and playing his ass off, and this footage is also historic as one of the last tours Toto did while Jeff Porcaro was alive and with the group,. The tour itself was after the main tour for The Seventh One and during another run after Toto's greatest hits album was released in 1990.

The examples and ideas in this episode range from smooth position-shifting phrases to aggressive bending/vibrato moves, a phrase centering around Steve's signature "catch" bending technique, some melodic tremolo-dipping action, and much more!

Lukather's always been a fiery guitarist with loads of melodic restraint and control, and there are a lot of things you can learn/add to your bag of tricks from studying his style. From bluesy string bends, wide and controlled vibrato, melodic phrasing, blistering chromatic licks, legato runs, tapping ideas, and all sorts of stuff - there's a reason players are still talking about this phenomenal player, who's been active and on the scene since the mid-1970s.
