Sweden to donate 16 Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine | Ukraine Brief

Sweden has announced a major defense deal in which Ukraine will acquire up to 20 modern Saab Gripen E/F fighter jets, with the first jets’ delivery planned in 2030. Additionally, Sweden will donate 16 older Gripen C/D aircraft to Ukraine, along with advanced Meteor air-to-air missiles, ammunition, training, and support systems. The package is part of Sweden’s largest military aid effort so far and aims to significantly strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. Ukraine’s parliament has approved by an overwhelming majority a loan agreement and memorandum of understanding, necessary to receive funds through the European Union’s €90-billion loan for Ukraine.

To discuss the Gripen deal, Ukraine Brief host Diana Skaya was joined by Aleksander Cwalina, contractor at the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center.
