#5 The Disappearing Island

Bermeja Island has quite a unique history. Or maybe I should say had a unique history. The reason you have to speak about this strange body of land in the past tense is because it actually no longer exists. Just like any other small island, it was distinctly placed on world atlas maps and was commonly recognized as a marker for Mexico when traveling in the ocean. But after 1921 the island seemingly just disappeared. Some assumed that the rising sea level – due to global warming – was the culprit, but if that were the case they you’d be able to still see the island underneath the water – which you cannot. Another theory is that an underwater earthquake sucked the island into oblivion, or that the United States even blew up the island for oil.

#4 More Mayans in Megalopolis

About 1200 years ago the indigenous people of Mexico – also known as Mayans – were at the height of their rule. About 5 months ago an aerial survey over northern Guatemala turned a new leaf in the understanding of those sophisticated peole, as over 60,000 new Mayan structures that included housing foundations, defensive fortifications and pyramids were uncovered. The site has been called Megalopolis, and expanded over 800 miles. Some experts say that this was one of the most complex civilizations to ever grace the earth, and that the Mayan population – at the height of their rule – was at least twice the size of England. This discovery also stifled beliefs that advanced society’s couldn’t survive in the tropics.

#3 New DNA

A mysterious form of new DNA was just discovered in human cells, and I don’t know about you but that sounds completely crazy to me. Isn’t it 2018? How are we still discovering things about us when we’ve been around for thousands of years? Anyway, I’m no scientist so I don’t want to talk out of bounds, but basically the way we think all DNA looks – you know, the infamous double helix with the ladder like structure that’s kinda twisted like a corkscrew – well in fact not all human DNA takes this shape. Without getting too sciency instead of the two stranded strings that we all recognize, there are cases of 4 stranded knots of genetic code as well. Interesting.

#2 New Shark Species

So since we’re talking about new things that perhaps we all should’ve known about, a brand new species of shark was discovered a few month ago in the Atlantic Ocean, and get this, it has ancestors that date back over 250 million years. The new species has been named the Atlantic Sixgill Shark. Now these guys aren’t very big – in terms of sharks – and reach about 6 feet in length. They also are only found in the absolute deepest depths of the oceans, so it’s pretty unlikely that you’ll run into one while scuba diving.

#1 Penguin Mega-Colony

I bet you were sitting over there thinking – I wonder how many penguins there are in Antarctica? Oh wait, were you not? Well I’m gonna let you know anyway, because this is simply amazing! Back in March of 2018 some fantastic images were captured proving that we were wrong about the penguin population across the globe – by about 70%. Yep, that means that this these specific penguin colonies amass more that 1.5 million penguins. These guys live on the Danger Islands, and it wasn’t until satellite images from space came down that we knew exactly how many flightless birds occupied this area.
