The Yungang Grottoes - Where Buddhism Became Chinese, China | Treasures of the World
In the Cloud Ridge Grottoes, which is the translation of the name Yungang, Indian Buddhism was transformed into a Chinese folk religion. In the 5th century, the foreign religion of Buddhism was declared the state religion by the emperors of the Wei dynasty.
In the heyday of cave art under the Northern Wei Dynasty and the Sui and Tang Dynasties, 252 caves were decorated with 51,000 stone figures at the behest of the Buddhist Emperor Wen Cheng Di.
