Many of my students, listeners, and viewers, arrive in Australia, Down Under, and quickly come into contact with strange words that they've never heard before. When they ask me about them, they're almost always Australian slang terms that they've heard in real English conversations with native speakers.
Today, this video aims to teach you 50+ Australian slang terms that you need to learn if you want to survive in Australia and sound much more like a native English speaker as well as understand the Aussie locals when they use such slang words.
Today's Aussie slang terms:
1. Arvo – afternoon
2. The Aussie Salut – when you wave your hand to scare away flies
3. Bail – to leave; cancel plans
4. A barbie – a barbecue
5. Bathers – a swimsuit
6. A beauty – a good thing
7. A billabong – a pond in a dry riverbed
8. A billy – a teapot made from a tin used on a camp fire
9. A bludger – a lazy person who doesn’t work hard. Often used in ‘dole bludger’
10. A bogan – an uncouth, unsophisticated, uneducated person; Australian ‘redneck’
11. A booze bus – a police vehicle used to breath test drivers
12. A bottle-o – a bottle shop, somewhere you can buy alcohol
13. Brekky – breakfast
14. A brolly – an umbrella
15. A buck – a dollar - $1
16. Budge smugglers – speedos
17. The bush – the Outback; the countryside far from civilization
18. A cab sav – a cabernet sauvignon
19. Cactus – broken, dead; tired, exhausted
20. Choc-a-bloc – completely full
21. A choccy biccy – a chocolate biscuit
22. A chook – a female chicken
23. Chrissie – Christmas
24. A ciggy – a cigarette
25. (Get) clucky – feel maternal, like you want to have children
26. Cobber – a very good friend, also “old cobber”
27. A coldie – a cold beverage, usually a beer
28. A cold one – a cold beverage, usually a beer
29. A cop/copper – a policeman – The police (cops/coppers)
30. Crikey! – An expression of surprise or being impressed
31. A croc – a crocodile
32. To be crook – to be sick or unwell
33. A dag – a silly person; a nerd or geek
34. Daks – trousers, pants, underwear
35. Deadest – are you serious?; true, authentic
36. Devo – Devastated
37. A drongo – a fool or stupid person
38. A dunny – a toilet, often used in ‘drop dunny’
39. An esky – a cooled container for keeping drinks cold
40. Fair dinkum – are you serious?; true, authentic
41. A flanno/flannie – a flannelette shirt
42. A frothy – a beer
43. G’day – Hello, hey, hi – (from “Good day”)
44. A galah – a stupid person. Lit. an Australian parrot that isn’t very smart
45. Get stuffed! – Screw you!
46. Can’t be stuffed! – Can’t be bothered
47. Go off – (For a party/social event) to be in full swing, lively, very busy
48. Good on ya! – Well done; good job
49. Goon – cheap wine sold in plastic bags in cardboard boxes
50. Hard yakka – Hard work
51. Heaps – A lot, much, many; really
