I-68 Westbound (End-to-End)
Traveling westbound on Interstate 68 from its eastern terminus on I-70 in Hancock, Maryland to its western terminus on I-79 in Morgantown, West Virginia. At nearly 113 miles in length, Interstate 68 travels through two states and five counties. Interstate 68 is also labeled in its entirety as Appalachian Development Highway System's "Corridor E".
The first portions of what is now Interstate 68 (such as the Cumberland Thruway) were constructed in the '60s during the time the Interstate Highway System was under construction, and signed as US Route 40. Today, most of I-68 in Maryland runs concurrent with US-40, with the former portions of Route 40 being signed as "Maryland Route 144" or "US Alternate 40". As I-68 was being constructed over the following decades, portions that weren't signed as US-40 or any other designation (such as US Route 219 or US Route 220, which both have concurrencies with I-68) were signed as US-48. This is interesting because, since the time the US-48 signage was retired in favor of "I-68", "US-48" was reintroduced in 2002 as the signage for "Corridor H", another ADHS corridor similar to and running south of I-68 (Corridor E). In August 1991, the final freeway segment of what was at the time "US-48" opened to traffic, and the signage change from "US Route 48" to "Interstate 68" was approved.
One of the most noteworthy features along I-68 is the Sideling Hill Road Cut, which took nearly three and a half years to build, opening in August 1985. At 340 feet deep, it is the deepest mountain cut in the region and is visible from miles away. It can even be seen clearly from I-70 westbound near Hancock.
