Do you need an agent to find an English teaching job in China? No you don't
If you come to China and are in the process of looking for a job you will obviously want to go to that particular city's LOCAL COMMUNITY SITE and look from there. What do I mean? Well, here in shenzhen there is a very very popular website that everybody goes to talk about what is going on and jobs, parties etc etc it's called www.shenzhenparty.com (it's NOT just about parties) but anyways ... the local schools, recruiters and teachers all have found out about it and mostly shenzhen jobs will be posted there. if you contact a poster, you can probably just set up an interview the next day and meet in shenzhen. there are a couple of other good sites that you can use globally and even if you have "landed" and are in a particular city already: http://www.eslcafe.com and http://www.echinacities.com/
be aware that the best way to get an interview is to be PHYSICALLY PRESENT NEAR YOUR EMPLOYER ... remember also that these last two (2) i just listed above receive tons of applications from all over the world ... i helped a school find a teacher through posting on there once and i got 40 applications for just one job vacancy ... again, it's best if you come here first and then look for your job.
Should you use a recruiting agency or agent to find a job teaching English in China? You really don't HAVE to have one at all. And if you do decide to have an agent help you find a job in China you should CONTINUE TO SEARCH on your own as well. The reason as sometimes the agents are busy and don't have time to find you one or where you want to work does not have the English teaching job (ie age of the students, type of school, university public private) or the terms are not to your liking or the school's.
Although I teach English to pay the bills I also do web design in Hong Kong and China:
