Is this the best Vanguard Fund in 2022?! VEA - Vanguard FTSE Development Markets Index Fund

VEA has underperformed SPY since inception, but its portfolio is most likely undervalued. While the portfolio is heavily diversified and weighted returns on equity are not exciting, the fund is fundamentally inexpensive. While VEA might not necessarily rebound relative to SPY, it could do so if global investors were to take note, and close the valuation gap. VEA is a decent risk diversifier, and risk reducer, especially for U.S. investors concerned about local and current equity valuations.

Vanguard FTSE Developed Markets ETF is an exchange-traded fund with a mandate to track the investment performance of the FTSE Developed All Cap ex US Index. The fund invests in large-, mid- and small-cap companies "located in Canada and the major markets of Europe and the Pacific region". The fund follows a "passively managed full-replication approach", i.e., it seeks only to meet the performance of its benchmark index.

The expense ratio of the fund is 0.05%, which is cheap, and the fund is popular with $159.3 billion in assets as of July 31, 2021. As of the same date, the fund had a large number of holdings; 4,048 (as reported). Given this lack of concentration, already we can think of VEA as a kind of 'long equity beta' fund; unless you are pessimistic on the fortunes of U.S. equities in particular, with VEA you are essentially just buying into equities as an asset class (on a global basis). But it would be a good way to express a relative value trade if you are bullish on equities but consider U.S. markets as disproportionately overvalued relative to international markets.
