Artificial Intelligence: banishing bias
Behavioural science distinguishes itself from traditional economics because human beings don't always act rationally, and can be subject to bias - we're not machines! But it gets worse - even machines don't act rationally or impartially, if they are trained to mimic human decision patterns. While there have been well-known cases of bias in machine learning and artificial intelligence, the natural knee-jerk reaction of forbidding algorithms from accessing protected characteristics comes with its own set of problems and in some situations can act against the principles of fairness they were designed to protect. We will hear from experts in AI and product development who will explore this complex but important topic.
