I’m terrified to sell emeralds.
MUSIC: Moon Men - Jake Chudnow:

Other than opals, emeralds are the only stone I am genuinely nervous to handle. It isn’t just because they are brittle; it’s because they are usually hiding something.
Almost every natural emerald on the market is treated with cedar oil or resin. It seeps into those internal fractures (jardin) and makes them invisible. It is a standard industry practice (like heating sapphires to improve colour), but it creates a massive vulnerability that most buyers don’t know about.
If you take your ring to a shitty jewellery shop for a quick clean and they drop it in an ultrasonic cleaner (the vibrating water tank), you are in trouble.
Those high frequency sound waves can literally shake the oil right out of the stone.
Best case scenario is that the gem comes out looking white, cloudy, and dry because the filler is gone. This is annoying but it can be fixed by retreating the stone.
Worst case is that the vibrations extend the existing cracks and the stone shatters right there in the water tank. There’s no coming back from that.
People confuse hardness (scratch resistance) with toughness (impact resistance).
Nephrite Jade is actually tougher than diamond.
Emerald is essentially just green glass with high anxiety.
Wear it for dinner. Take it off for the dishes. And never, ever let it near an ultrasonic cleaner.
